Grania: Lady Gregory’s bad-girl drama
Despite a forced production, the emotions in this neglected play are impressively complex.

There is a scene early in the Abbey Theatre’s mythic play when an old warrior meets his young fiancé for the first time, and asks if she has ever been in love. Grania, daughter of the king of Ireland, proceeds to tell an endearing story about a young man rescuing her dog from hunters’ hounds. “Is that now what you would call love?” she asks. “Indeed, I think it is little at all you know of it,” says Finn, with a gentle smile.
